PicsArt: Innovating Through Competition and the Rise of Creative AI

Since its inception over a decade ago, PicsArt has carved a niche for itself as a leader in the image and video editing space, boasting a remarkable 150 million monthly active users across its platform. However, the journey hasn’t been devoid of challenges, particularly given the intensifying competition from formidable adversaries such as Canva and Adobe in the increasingly crowded arena of digital editing tools.

At the recent WCIT conference in Armenia, Artavazd Mehrabyan, the Co-Founder and CTO of PicsArt, shared insights into the evolving landscape of creative editing. He emphasized the ongoing struggle to differentiate in a field where many features offered by PicsArt have been rapidly replicated by competitors. "In many ways, PicsArt pioneered the all-in-one mobile editing suite, a concept that was novel back in 2011," Mehrabyan remarked. "Yet, as we navigated our growth, we found ourselves in a continuous cycle of imitation."

The Impact of AI in Image Editing

A testament to its innovative spirit, PicsArt has embraced artificial intelligence (AI), introducing object generation capabilities that enable users to create specific elements for their images. As AI becomes more prevalent, other platforms have also begun to adopt similar functionalities, creating a landscape marked by overlap and competition.

Rather than merely adding features to its extensive suite of AI tools—over two dozen as of now—Mehrabyan intends to focus on enhancing the overall quality and user experience. "Our goal is to align our tools with the specific needs of our customers, whether they are enhancing personal photos or designing eye-catching advertisements," he noted.

Building a Foundation of High-Quality Data

In its early days, PicsArt directed its efforts toward refining mobile editing capabilities. The transition to become an AI-centric organization began in earnest in 2016 when the platform rolled out its first AI feature. This laid the groundwork for leveraging larger models to introduce advanced functionalities like background removal and replacement.

Aiming to maximize its proprietary data, the company has developed a unique user-generated content model. Users tag their images as "free to edit," offering the opportunity for others to utilize or modify those images. Although this has created a vast resource for training AI models, the challenge lies in ensuring the data’s quality. "We must meticulously curate and cleanse the data before it can be utilized to train our models," Mehrabyan explained.

Cultivating Contextual Intelligence

As PicsArt continues to evolve, enhancing user experience remains a driving force. By establishing a feedback loop—combining data-driven insights with human input—PicsArt aims to develop what Mehrabyan calls “contextual intelligence.” This feature is particularly beneficial for business users seeking efficient workflows for tasks like graphic and advertisement creation.

"Contextual intelligence not only reacts to past user behavior but anticipates future needs, streamlining productivity," he stated. The platform aims to implement a brand kit functionality, allowing users to tailor the output according to their identity and preferences.

The Future: Creative AI Agents

Looking ahead, Mehrabyan envisions a future where PicsArt users will benefit from AI agents—digital assistants equipped with an understanding of user needs and design preferences. "This copilot will support users by intuitively guiding them through tasks, automating repetitive workflows, and maximizing their creative potential," he explained.

AI’s influence isn’t just about convenience. As the market for AI-driven image editing tools is projected to soar, the global AI image editor market is expected to grow from $80.3 million in 2024 to $217.9 million by 2034, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.5%. Furthermore, the overall market for AI-driven generation in image editing could rise from $8.7 billion to an astonishing $60.8 billion by 2030, underscoring the transformative potential of these technologies.

As PicsArt navigates the challenges of competition and strives to maintain its unique position, the integration of AI is set to redefine not just how users engage with design tools but also how they enhance their creative capabilities in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
