SAG-AFTRA Reopens Dialogue with Video Game Industry Over AI Voice Acting

In a significant development for the video game industry, the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has announced it will continue negotiations with game developers regarding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in voice acting. Scheduled to resume on October 23, this discussion aims to establish guidelines that protect the rights of voice actors in an industry increasingly influenced by technological advancements.

The negotiations will take place between SAG-AFTRA and a consortium of major video game companies collectively known as the convenience bargaining group. This group includes industry heavyweights such as Activision Productions, Electronic Arts Productions, Disney Character Voices, and Insomniac Games, among others. The ongoing talks represent a crucial juncture for voice talent as they seek to navigate the evolving landscape shaped by AI.

Negotiations initially reached an impasse leading to a strike call on July 24, as the union sought to address critical concerns regarding the balance of artist rights with the growing use of AI tools in game development. The issue of AI’s role in creative processes has sparked ongoing debates within the industry, with SAG-AFTRA advocating for clear protections and fair usage policies for its members.

While no detailed comments have been released from either side regarding the upcoming talks, SAG-AFTRA is actively mobilizing its members. In a show of solidarity, union representatives are expected to picket at WB Games’ location in Burbank, California, demonstrating their commitment to advocating for fair labor practices.
